Five Tips for Designing Cedar Park Craftsman Kitchens
Five Tips for Designing Cedar Park Craftsman Kitchens
We are frequently asked the following question: How can I design an authentic craftsman-style kitchen? Many interior designers call a kitchen a "craftsman kitchen" by gluing craftsman doors to wood cabinets. But what did the kitchen look like during the craftsman period?
Craftsman styles can be found from the 1860s to the 1930s. They are known for their use of stained wooden, clean lines, and tiles and cabinetry that were made by craftsmen. Although the popularity of the craftsman style is a reaction to the industrial revolution, many companies began mass-producing these materials and built-ins. Although many homes from this time had beautiful porches and parlors to accommodate guests, the kitchen was intended for staff use only. A homeowner in the early 1900s would not show off their utilitarian kitchen, but we love the modern contrast of a charming, simple kitchen in an older, more luxurious home.
Cedar Park Home Remodels Interior Designers know how to make rooms that honor craftsman style, but don't feel like you are in a time machine. Here are some ideas:
1) Mix and match built-ins and furniture pieces within your kitchen.
Built-in kitchens became popular during the Craftsman era. One wall would be a kitchen, while the rest would have freestanding furniture. Our kitchen remodels give the impression of distinct furniture pieces. This is done by using contrasting colors, hardware, and details like feet. A lot of times, an old hutch will be found to go with a vintage-styled kitchen. A unique piece of vintage furniture can really bring charm and history into a new renovation.
2) Craftsman Era materials are still being manufactured!
We love craftsman kitchens that use authentic materials. Our clients wanted a stunning craftsman-style backsplash for their kitchen when we designed it. There are still companies that make craftsman-era products that look and feel authentic when you remodel your kitchen. Motawi, Bradbury wallpaper, and Stickley furniture are a few of our favorite companies.
3) Use lots of natural wood.
Natural wood is one of the most striking features in fine craftsman houses. The wooden floors of craftsman homes were often adorned with moldings and built-ins. Unfortunately, dark rooms often resulted. You can use stained wood to make moldings or floors, even though it might feel brighter. Use lots of wood in bright rooms with lots of sunlight. Mixing woods and stain colors are acceptable. You can keep your kitchen bright by using lighter stains.
4) Add vintage-style cabinetry elements.
This authentic craftsman-style kitchen features gorgeous period details. Exposed hinges, wooden end brackets, and inset doors are just a few of the many details we'd love for a new craftsman-style kitchen. This cabinet also has multiple panels on each of its doors. This is a nice touch, but not too extravagant. Craftsman kitchens such as this one were typically built on-site. You may have noticed that most cabinets in this series share framing. These cabinets are not individual boxes that are screwed together but rather custom pieces made for the space. Cedar Park Home Remodels no longer builds them on-site. However, we do offer custom cabinets that can be made in a very similar way.
One thing we won't repeat from this vintage-style kitchen: There are no tee kicks. While we love the furniture look and feel great, modern homeowners demand that there is enough space for a heel kick. This is especially true when the sink is in view. 5) Utility is the most important priority.
While searching online for craftsman-style kitchens, we noticed that many new kitchens featured elaborate moldings, flared legs, and other silly details that were difficult to clean. There are many ways to design a modern craftsman's kitchen. However, we believe that simplicity and a utilitarian look are what make the original craftsman style so appealing. Mixing vintage cabinetry with modern fixtures, hardware, or appliances is acceptable. A beautiful kitchen is not as important as a useful one.
